Derek Saenz
Coach Derek Saenz joins the LBVBC Family for his first season, eager to pass along his love for and knowledge of the game to young players. Coach Derek has spent the past thirteen years coaching at the collegiate, club, and high school levels. Whether he is coaching boys or girls, his emphasis on proper training and enjoying this great sport remains the same.
Coach Derek began playing volleyball in high school at Granada Hills High School. It was there that he discovered his affinity and passion for the sport. He continued on to play for Pierce College where he and his team were two-time State Champions.
Following his time at Pierce College, Coach Derek began his coaching career. He returned to his alma mater, Granada Hills High School to (2000-2002). Coach Derek coached club at Santa Monica Beach Volleyball Club (2002-2005) before starting Shock Volleyball Club in Thousand Oaks, CA in 2006. During that season his 14 & under boys team captured the Bronze Medal at the Junior Olympics. In 2008 Coach Derek chose to embark on a new challenge as he moved to Pennsylvania to serve as an Assistant Coach at West Chester University. While at West Chester he oversaw recruiting, scouting, and training of the team's setters and middle blockers. In 2010 he returned to Southern California where he served as a coach and trainer at Mizuno Long Beach and Mizuno LB West. While at Mizuno Long Beach he helped train the girls' 16 & under team earn a Gold Medal in the Open Division at the 2011 Junior Olympics in Atlanta, GA. Most recently, in 2013 Coach Derek developed Santa Clarita Juniors, a non-profit club dedicated to offering greater opportunities to low income families.
